Dr. Fu Hong, Assistant Professor of Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, has recently invented and developed an intelligent eye misalignment measurement system, a novel solution to the diagnosis of strabismus. Strabismus affects approximately 4% of the global population, and timely diagnosis is often delayed by limited medical resources and high diagnostic costs. The system provides fast, accurate diagnosis in minutes and reduces costs by 86% as compared to manual measurements. By leveraging advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, it objectively tracks eye movements, enabling precise and rapid diagnosis.

Recognized for its innovation, the system has won two international gold awards in 2023, including a Gold Award at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2023 and a Gold Award at the 8th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, iCAN 2023. What's more important, this novel technology is highly recognized by ophthalmologist specialized in strabismus and Hong Kong Association of Squint and Double Vision Sufferers. Recently, the knowledge has been successfully transferred to a high-tech biomedical company with a non-exclusive license worth over HK$ 1.10 million. With its knowledge transfer and commercialization, this new technology could improve the lives of strabismus patients and ocular healthcare, thus creating a valuable impact on our society and community.
