Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Language is a fundamental aspect of our society, and at the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, we are firmly committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through our research and initiatives. Our efforts are particularly focused on promoting quality education (SDG4), fostering gender equality (SDG5), and preserving cultural heritage (SDG11)

In a multilingual society such as Hong Kong, ensuring access to quality education for individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is paramount. Our ongoing efforts to improve language education through corpus linguistic research ensure students can receive quality English education through research and knowledge transfer projects. Our research-enhanced corpus-aided programs are designed to address the needs of local students to achieve better educational outcomes in reaching the bilingual and triliterate language goals. Our projects also support ethnic minority students in Hong Kong by developing educational tools that facilitate their learning and integration.

We are also dedicated to the preservation of local languages and cultural practices, recognising their vital role in maintaining cultural identity and diversity. This is crucial for the transmission of human knowledge and the sustainability of urban environments. We leverage digital humanities techniques to create language resources to document and promote local cultures.

Our work in gender studies further underscores our commitment to equality and inclusivity. Through various research projects, we aim to understand and address gender disparities in language use and education, contributing to a more equitable society.
