Kwai Sang Lee is a Professor in the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, while also serving as the Associate Dean and the Director of the Professional Doctorate Programme for the Graduate School. Prior to joining our university, he taught at the Office of General Education and the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Lee possesses extensive administrative experience spanning a wide range of areas, from student affairs and general education to undergraduate curricula and doctoral programmes. His primary research area centres on the ‘two ends’ of Chinese intellectual history, investigating the classical traditions of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties, as well as their paradigm shifts into modern scholarship. He has specifically delved into the literary studies of scholars such as Wang Zhong, Jiao Xun, and Ruan Yuan, as well as Cai Yuanpei, Hu Shi, and Chen Yinke. His current research revolves around the Analects and the Lüshi Chunqiu, which are widely acknowledged as pivotal works representing the commencement and summation of pre-Qin philosophical thought. His research blends the strengths of both Eastern and Western scholarly approaches. In addition to traditional Chinese philology and close reading, he leverages contemporary methods and tools from analytical philosophy, hermeneutics, and artificial intelligence to explore the profound meanings of ancient Chinese texts from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. He has successfully secured multiple research funding grants for projects in Chinese studies and Chinese education, including the highly competitive General Research Fund from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. His body of work includes three single-authored academic monographs and dozens of peer-reviewed articles published in leading academic journals in the field.
