Progressivism and Vocationalism in Chinese Education: Past and Present

Child-Centred or Social Efficiency? Progressive Education in China’s Education System since the 1920s

Vocational Education as a Panacea? Historical Lessons for the Current Job Market in China and Germany

Abstract:

The early twentieth century was a period of vigorous debate on the future direction of education in China. Experts evoked foreign models as arguments for radical change. On the one hand, China embraced ideas of progressive education that originated in the United States. While John Dewey’s child-centred approach features prominently in historical accounts, the so-called administrative progressives who championed social efficiency left a deeper imprint on Chinese education. On the other hand, Germany, in Chinese eyes, became a model for vocational education. Education, in this sense, should be practical and closely related to the needs of the job market. The seminar elucidates how progressivism and vocationalism continue to shape educational reform debates up to the present day.
