Topic:

Confronting the Past Between Epistemology, World View, and Politics: Leopold von Ranke, Fu Sinian, and Chen Yinque in Comparison

Abstract:

Chinese historiography has one of the longest traditions in human history. Yet, towards the end of the 19th century, it faced unprecedented challenges. Confronted with the modern view of linear time and progressive history, it had to reinvent itself within the complex triangle of scholarship, world view, and politics, and in close exchange with and under the influence of Western historiography. Fu Sinian, Chen Yinque have both played a vital role in this process, and have both been equated with Leopold von Ranke, the German founder of modern historiography. In this presentation, I will analyze their theory and practice of historiography, compare them to Ranke and draw conclusions regarding the complex issue of research on the history of Sino-Western encounter during the modern period.
