[4 Dec] Join Us for a Unique Visit and Career Talk with Ming Pao!

Internationally renowned Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao明報 showcased its printing facilities, editorial capabilities, and extensive archives during a visit by postgraduate students from the Education University of Hong Kong on December 4, 2024. Arranged by the Graduate School and Ming Pao, the visit emphasised the importance of the media in a fast-changing world. Learning more about the industry piqued the students’ interest in media work.

Established in 1959, Ming Pao is published by Media Chinese International. The broadsheet is the cornerstone of the company’s product portfolio, including newspapers, magazines, and books across Southeast Asia, Greater China, and North America.

The visit started with the printing presses, which are active daily from 9 pm until 3 am. Ming Pao tour guides explained that the printing process follows a planned order. News is printed last to ensure morning readers get the latest information. Breaking news is published through Ming Pao’s online channels.

Students then met and interacted with members of the editorial department. Journalists discussed how they conduct various interviews, uncover news stories, and provide content for the newspaper. Editors responsible for different aspects of the newspaper shared their experiences about proofreading text and checking images.

The archives room was the next stop on the tour. The Ming Pao editorial team uses the archive to access stories and images dating back 65 years. The purpose-built library holds proprietary material unavailable through web searches or public databases. Students learned that specialised tools are needed to view some of the archives.

The tour ended with a career development talk. The discussion focused on how media affect society, the relationship between media and society, and the integration of media and education. The talk also highlighted the essential skills needed to work at Ming Pao. The Graduate School greatly appreciates Ming Pao’s hospitality and looks forward to future events.
