We would like to extend our congratulations to Dr Chi-Ming Lam, Associate Professor in Philosophy of Education in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership at the Education University of Hong Kong, on the publication of his new book, Confucianism: An Approach to Education for Morality and Rationality (Brill, July 2025). The book explores how Confucian virtues such as humility and reflection can contribute to moral and rational education today. By engaging with Karl Popper’s falsificationism, it offers fresh insights into cultivating critical thinking and ethical responsibility while challenging the view that Confucianism is incompatible with rationality. This latest publication highlights EPL’s international visibility and research impact, positioning Confucianism as a powerful framework for rethinking moral education and preparing critically engaged global citizens.
Abstract:
Confucianism: An Approach to Education for Morality and Rationality is an explorative study that bridges the gap between traditional Confucian wisdom and contemporary educational practices. The book delves deep into the virtues of humility, reverence, and reflection in Confucian teaching, dispels the myth of incompatibility between Confucianism and rationalism, and finally, investigates the connection between Confucianism and Popper’s falsificationism theory. It takes readers on a journey through philosophical presuppositions, the role of education in fostering open societies, and the practical applications of these ideas. This book targets educators, philosophers, and anyone interested in understanding how the ancient wisdom of Confucianism can be harnessed in modern education to promote morality and rationality.
