The 3rd International Conference on Biological Waste as Resource
Over 100 academics, experts and undergraduates from Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Mainland China, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States gathered today (17 December) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) to kick off the 3rd International Conference on Biological Waste as Resource (BWR Conference). Co-organised by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies of EdUHK, Korea University, and Sejong University in Korea, and sponsored by the Croucher Foundation, the three-day Conference provides a platform for experts to share the their experience and insights into organic waste management and related policies.
Officiating at the ceremony were Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung, President of EdUHK, and MrWong Kam-sing, Secretary for the Environment. Mr Jude Chow Chee-ping, Chairperson of the Hong Kong Waste Management Association, and Mr Alfred Lee Chi-kin, former Chairman of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management – Hong Kong Branch, joined representatives from the Drainage Services Department and the Water Supplies Department to share the their experience and insights into using biological waste as a resource.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung said, “Since our large strategic landfills will soon be filled up, this timely conference provides an excellent opportunity for experts to meet and exchange information concerning the treatment and utilisation of organic waste, and to promote awareness and knowledge of the conversion of organic waste into valuable resources.”
Organic waste, such as food waste, garden waste, and waste sludge, has imposed a critical burden on the environment. The BWR Conference this year will examine topics pertaining to “Energy/Resource Recovery”, “Environmental Remediation”, and “Sustainable Waste Management” of organic waste. It will discuss state-of-the-art technologies, advanced management strategies, and various issues to assist the formulation of an effective sustainable management agenda for organic waste.
