Launch of HK’s First-ever Best Teacher of the Elders Award Scheme
A total of 40 students were conferred a Professional Certificate in Lifelong and Elderly Education today (17 December) at the 2017-18 graduation ceremony organised by the Elder Academy at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). At the ceremony, the University also inaugurated Hong Kong’s first-ever “Best Teacher of the Elders Award Scheme”, in recognition of teachers who serve the elderly education sector with heart and passion.
Officiating at the ceremony were Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) of EdUHK; Mr Chan How-chi, Chairman of the Elderly Comission Committee on Elder Academy Development Foundation; Mr Patrick Ho Hin-ming, Assistant Chief Executive (Elderly Service) of Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service of Hong Kong; Mr Billie Lau Chung, Service Director (Elderly Service) of Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service of Hong Kong; and Professor Maureen Tam Siu-ling, Head of the EdUHK Elder Academy. They joined the new batch of graduates to share their joy and achievements.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor John Lee Chi-kin said, “EdUHK has always strived to promote lifelong learning, and it is encouraging to see more seniors who are keen to excel themselves and move with the times through continuous learning. Our professional training enables devoted elderly teachers to pass on their knowledge and experience in advancing elderly education in Hong Kong.”
Now in its ninth year, the “Train-the-trainer” PC Programme has trained nearly 300 teachers. Over half of the graduates are currently teaching at various organisations that serve the elder, including elder academies and elderly community centres across Hong Kong, helping elderly students enjoy fruitful lives through sharing their experience and skills.
In recognition of the dedication and commitment of the practitioners in the field, and to promote the importance of elderly education and lifelong learning, EdUHK launched the first-ever “Best Teacher of the Elders Award Scheme” in Hong Kong on the same occasion. Supported by the Committee on Elder Academy Development Foundation, the award scheme welcomes tireless educators of the elderly, aged 18 or above with over three years of teaching experience, to participate. The deadline for submission is 28 February 2019. To download the application form and award scheme details, please go to www.eduhk.hk/elderacademy.
Established in 2008, the EdUHK Elder Academy provides a wide variety of learning opportunities for older people. The PC Programme, jointly offered by the EdUHK Elder Academy and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hong Kong, is an eight-month programme comprising four core subjects: (1) an overview of lifelong learning and elderly education, (2) theory and practice, (3) psychology and strategies, and (4) pedagogy and teaching demonstrations.
The EdUHK Elder Academy also organises a range of undergraduate courses for people aged 60 or above. Elderly learners can enroll in the courses as observing students and be awarded certificates after completing the courses.
