EdUHK Launches Online Resources about Hong Kong’s Return to China

Following the launch of teaching materials on the Basic Law and national security education, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) recently developed a new series of e-learning resources about Hong Kong’s return to China, in collaboration with online self-learning platform EVIGarten.

The resources, including animated videos, teaching ideas involving STEM, fun facts, videos and related news sharing, are intended to introduce the historical context of the establishment of the HKSAR for children in a lively and interesting way, while fostering their sense of national identity at an early stage.

With experts from the University’s Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) and the Educational Innovation Leadership Project under the Knowledge Transfer Sub-Office serving as the project’s consultants, the resources were divided into the following six areas and are now available for free for all kindergartens and primary schools:

Scholars’ Interview: Fun Facts about Hong Kong

Principal Tai Hey-lap, Co-Director of the Educational Innovation Leadership Project, and Dr Sun Jin, Associate Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education at EdUHK share their memories of HKSAR Establishment Day.

Professor Kerry Lee, Head of ECE said, “Concepts like a sense of belonging and national identity may be abstract and difficult for young children. Our e-resources not only present the history and relevant knowledge of Hong Kong’s return in an easy-to-understand manner, but also explain the basic scientific principles behind the flag-raising ceremony, providing kindergartens and primary schools with a systematic and comprehensive approach to expand students’ understanding of the subject.”

Dr Sun Jin, Associate Head of ECE and Consultant for the project, added, "The content of these e-learning resources is closely related to young children's daily lives. Beyond school, parents can make use of these videos and animations to explain the information and ideas to their children, thus helping them to establish a sense of belonging to the country.”

The "Hong Kong’s Return to China" e-learning resources have been uploaded to the EVIGarten platform. Kindergartens and primary schools can use their accounts to access the resources. Non-users may refer to the EVI FRIENDS website (https://www.evifriends.com.hk) for some of the videos and animations.
