EdUHK “Joyful Day‧2018” Kick-off Ceremony
Over 100 students and staff gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (20 October) for the kick-off ceremony of “Joyful Day‧『惜‧玩』2018”, after which they headed to 11 social units in Tai Po to provide children’s services and donate new and upcycled toys to underprivileged children.
Co-organised by the Wofoo Whole Person Development Centre of EdUHK’s Student Affairs Office and the University’s Human Resources Office, Joyful Day‧『惜‧玩』2018 is the fifth major event in the “Action By Care” programme – a mass community service campaign launched by the Centre in 2015 to nurture students as caring leaders. At the kick-off ceremony, guests were invited to play with vintage toys, such as bamboo-copters and soap bubbles, to experience the fun children had with simple toys in the old days.
Officiating at the ceremony, EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung noted how technological advances had taken their toll on human relations, adding that he hoped the event would spread the idea of simple happiness to the community. He said, “Toys in the old days may not have been as vibrant as the toys and gadgets we see today. But we must remember that our childhood happiness did not come from the toys alone, but also from the heart-to-heart interaction we experienced.” He said he hoped the event would convey the importance of learning to cherish relationships and share.
Joyful Day‧『惜‧玩』2018 began last month. The four-week event has two parts – “Toy Collection Days” and “Service Day”. The Toy Collection Days were held on EdUHK’s Tai Po campus, where collection booths were set up by student volunteers to encourage University students and staff to donate toys for upcycling. More than 150 toys were collected over the four-week period.
The kick-off ceremony marked the start of Service Day, following the lead of EdUHK’s student volunteers. Bringing with them new and upcycled toys, the student volunteers visited various social units in Tai Po to conduct children services and donate the toys to those in need.
The event provided over 100 participants with a great learning experience. Over 150 children benefited from the event.
