The Symposium on Empowering Teachers and Young Children in the Digital and AI Era was successfully held on November 23, 2024, at the InnoCentre, in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. It marked the first activity of the "Professional Growth in Early Childhood Education" Public Lecture Series organised by the Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). The symposium brought together kindergarten principals, educators, researchers and experts from Hong Kong and Shenzhen to discuss how to enhance teachers' professional capabilities and children's learning experiences through emerging technologies and innovative practices.
The event was well received with over 500 pre-event registrations from the early childhood education sector. It consisted of three sessions, including “Teaching Case Sharing", "Expert Commentary" and "Course Introduction".
“Our department emphasises the transformative power of technology in early childhood education, while also highlights the challenges educators face in integrating technology to enhance course quality effectively,” Dr. Li Jianbin, Associate Head (Community Engagement) of the ECE Department, said in his welcome speech.
In the first session, principals from kindergartens in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, including Ms. Kwan Pui-yan of TWGHs Ko Teck Kin Memorial Kindergarten, Ms. Shi En and Ms. Li Hong of Shenzhen Lianhuabei Kindergarten, and Ms. Hu Yuzi of Shenzhen Nanshan Beilei Shekou Kindergarten, shared their insights and experiences in teaching practice. After that, we were delighted to have Prof. Li Hui, Philip, Chair Professor of the ECE Department, responded to participants regarding empowering early childhood educators.
The last session has featured Dr. Yang Weipeng, who introduced the "Story-Inspired Robot Programming Course for Young Children" invented by his research team, and the three Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) part-time programmes.
The symposium concluded at the end to applause from the audiences. We would like to thank all the guests and participants for their attendance, and look forward to seeing you all again in our public lecture series!
