Dr Weipeng Yang and Ms Jiahong Su Propose Framework Guiding GenAI Use in Education

2023-08-10

ECE EdUHK researcher, Dr. Weipeng Yang and Ms. Jiahong Su from the University of Hong Kong proposed a theoretical framework (IDEE) for guiding the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in education (also called as ‘educative AI’ in their framework).

They developed the framework so that educators can be guided on how to integrate GenAI into educational activities and improve the teaching and learning process. The four-step framework ‘IDEE,’ includes:

  • Identifying the desired outcomes,

  • Determining the appropriate level of automation,

  • Ensuring ethical considerations, and

  • Evaluating effectiveness.

Their study published in ECNU Review of Education on April 19, 2023 also addresses important questions that have arisen with the advent of ChatGPT, GPT-4 and similar AI applications in education, including their potential benefits and limitations.

“While we acknowledge the benefits of educative AI, we also recognize that many educators feel threatened by it and are worried about plagiarism by students and whether their jobs can be replaced by ChatGPT. We hope that our paper and framework can enlightened people about what ChatGPT is and how it can be used as an ally in education.”

Just three months after its release, the article has been downloaded more than 7,000 times and has been featured in many science websites and blogs including Phys.org, ScienMag, Bioengineer.org, NoticiasMXPolitico, and IndicePolitico
