The
Institute's distinctive focus has always been the enhancement
of teacher education. It provides students with a wide
array of opportunities and facilities, both locally
and internationally, to improve their learning and teaching
abilities. The same dedicated spirit is promulgated
by the Institute, to drive the entire education sector
into becoming a constantly improving and continuously
learning community.

kits, 5,000 printed journal titles as well as 10,000
e-journal titles; students are strongly supported in
their academic endeavours. The Institute Library, with
its leading reputation, supports not only the teaching,
learning and research of pre-service students, but also
the professional development of in-service teachers
who are advancing their abilities at the Institute.
Broadening Exposure through Best Practices
Throughout their studies, students are guided by educators,
who are passionate about teaching and keen to pass
on their own experiences in teaching as their chosen
profession.
Broadening student horizons, the Institute enables students
to participate in study visits, exchange programmes
or whole-semester immersion programmes, either overseas
or on the mainland. With its widespread connections
around the world, the Institute arranges formal programmes
as well as less formal study visits to the UK, US, Australia,
New Zealand, Canada, France, Korea and Singapore; as
well as to major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai,
Nanjing, Xian, Changchun and Shenzhen. Students all
agree that the invaluable experiences gained during
these visits have enhanced their language skills and
confidence levels, developed their independence and
broadened their outlook of the world.

Meeting
the Needs of Hong Kong's Education Community
Preparing Teachers
for the "3-3-4" Education Reforms |
With the advent of Hong Kong’s "3-3-4"
education reforms, when Liberal Studies will be introduced
as a core subject at senior secondary school levels,
teachers will need to have multiple perspectives and
an updated knowledge base to facilitate student learning.
Tapping the Institute's highly experienced inter-disciplinary
approach to programme design, in 2004-05, the Education
and Manpower Bureau (EMB) once again commissioned the
Institute's Department of Mathematics, Science, Social
Sciences and Technology to run its in-service teacher
development course "Leadership and Management of
the New General Studies Curriculum" for panel heads
and curriculum leaders in primary schools. Adding further
thrust to its efforts to promote the development of
Hong Kong's teaching professionals, the Department organised
"From Integrated Humanities to Liberal Studies:
Challenges and Opportunities in Integrating Students'
Learning" on 23 April 2005. With interested participants
from local tertiary institutions, government and secondary
schools, the conference served as a useful platform
for professional discourse and experience-sharing.
