As the
only tertiary institution focused entirely on teacher
education in Hong Kong, the Institute's mission is to
upgrade the profession, turning out dedicated and caring
teaching professionals. These teachers, in turn, will
have a far-reaching impact on the community as they
engage in their vital role of educating the young people
of Hong Kong and transforming the outlook of the territory's
future generations.
Turning Dreams into Reality
In 2004-05, the Institute received over 15,000 applications
for admission to its degree programmes. Our students,
who often come from modest family backgrounds, choose
teaching as a career, not for its material returns but
with the desire to serve the community through their
passion for teaching. During the year, almost 70% of
the Institute's students sought financial assistance,

applying
for government grants and loans, as well as bursaries
and interest-free loans to support their studies. Despite
these difficulties they achieved strong progress in
their academic studies, while at the same time, gaining
increased exposure through overseas study visits, exchange
programmes, immersion programmes as well as a diverse
range of extra-curricular activities. Promoting motivation
and excellence among students, 8.2% of full-time students
received scholarships and prizes, with 122 scholarships,
worth around $2,840,000, being granted during the year
while a further 114 prizes were awarded.

Broadening
Student Horizons
During the year, the Institute saw an increasing number
of international students. In addition to 37 students
from mainland China, students also came from the UK,
Australia, Canada, Philippines, Singapore, India and
from countries as far afield as Ghana in West Africa.
With the presence of international students, it promotes
growing diversity, gives local students the opportunity
to interact with and learn from fellow students who
have entirely different customs and cultures. This healthy
interchange of cross-cultural knowledge and experience
creates a natural learning environment, broadening students'
horizons as an integral part of their education process.
Creating an All Round Learning
Experience
Nurturing students to become well-rounded individuals
and knowledgeable, caring and professional teachers
is the Institute's primary mission. Expected to excel
in their academic studies, students are additionally
given every opportunity to develop their leadership
potential and organisational and inter-personal skills,
through community service and other extra-curricular
activities. In 2004-05, students contributed close to
13,300 hours in the community. At the same time, over
20,000 student enrolments were recorded in diverse whole
person development programmes, ranging from counselling
and personal development to learning enhancement activities
and service to the community. |
