1. Qiantang River (錢塘江)
Originating in the border region of Anhui and Jiangxi provinces, the Qiantang River runs for 459 kilometres, passing through Hangzhou and flowing into the East China Sea. Qiantang River is famous for its world’s largest tidal bore, a long breaking wave known as the Silver Dragon. The best watching time is on the eighteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar (around September and October), when the sun, the moon and the earth are aligned and the gravitation received by the sea is the greatest. The tide rushing into the river mouth from the bay causes a bore which can reach up to 9 metres (30 feet) in height, and travel at up to 40 kilometres (25 miles) per hour. You can feel the power of nature through the incoming tide like a wall travelling up against the river’s current and the roaring sound of stormy water.
