Professor Mette Hjort is a former Dean of Arts and Chair Professor of Humanities at the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), where she joined in 2018. She was Head of the School of Film, Media and Journalism at the University of Lincoln, United Kingdom (2022-2024). She also worked at universities in Canada, Hong Kong and Europe, including McGill University, Canada (1989-1997), the University of Copenhagen, Denmark (2016- 2018), Lingnan University (LU), Hong Kong (2005-2016) and the University of Hong Kong (2001-2004). At LU, she assumed the role of Associate Vice President (Academic Quality Assurance & Internationalisation) from 2013 to 2015. Professor Hjort received her PhD from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences), France and her bachelor's and master's degrees from McGill University, Canada. She was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by Aalborg University, Denmark. Professor Hjort has been appointed Chair Professor of Film and Media Studies and will be academically based at the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities. She assumed her duties on 1 July 2024. 

 

Professor Hjort is an established academic in Film and Media Studies. She is a founding fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities, and has served on the University Grants Committee (appointed by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive) and on the Board of the Danish Film Institute (appointed by the Danish Minister of Culture). She is a prolific researcher and actively engages herself in international collaboration projects. With her expertise, research experience and international network, Professor Hjort will help chart the new Film & Media Studies interdisciplinary research domain at the University. She will also assume academic leadership for the department and support the faculty.
