The key theme of the Skills for Life programme is to engage in research and projects that enhance the capacity of people of all ages to live fulfilling and healthy lives, and to achieve their potential in employment. The overarching objective is to ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning basing the strategic direction on Sustainable Development Goal No. 4, Target No. 4:

“substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship”.

Our flagship project is the development of a website portal focusing on Skills for Life where people can learn skills that are truly valued by employers and thus increase their opportunities for worthwhile employment.

Our research indicates that key skills needed are:

·         Communicating

·         Problem-solving

·         Counselling

·         Holding meetings

·         Being a team player

·         Personal well-being

·         Financial literacy

·         Project management

·         Strategic leadership

·         Research

The portal contains resources  (mainly in English but with some resources in traditional Chinese and others with Chinese subtitles) including videos, scenarios,conceptual frameworks, links to useful sites, and advice for students. The conceptual basis is drawn from the four ‘Pillars of Learning’ identified by the International Commission for the Twenty-first Century, in the Delors Report for UNESCO, “Learning: The Treasure Within”, namely:
  • learning to be;
  • learning to know;
  • learning to do; and
  • learning to live together.
