Event Details
Background:
In response to the Chief Executive 2015 Policy Address in enriching the curricular and learning activities of Science, Technology and Mathematics, and thereby allowing primary and secondary students to fully realise their potential in innovation under the “Belt and Road” Initiative, we, the organizers, initiate to hold a new interschool event called the Hong Kong STEM Olympiad 2016. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics which is the current focus of educational development around the world. This event aims at nurturing not only individual STEM subject knowledge but also integrated skills and problem solving techniques for innovative ways of dealing with contemporary environmental issues through the teamwork of the student participants. It is anticipated that about 700 secondary 5 & 6 students from around 100 different secondary schools will form teams to participate in this event.
Objectives:
-
To provide senior secondary school students with informal learning opportunities to deepen their understanding of STEM, and to reflect on their interest in pursuing further study in STEM subjects and career; and
-
To create an atmosphere conducive to the teaching and learning of STEM in secondary schools, and to heighten teachers’ and students’ awareness of the importance of STEM education.
Features:
-
Students will work in teams to participate in the competition of STEM related “Knowledge Challenge (知識大檢閱)” on both an individual and a team basis as well as the competition of “Innovations in Practice Challenge (創新實踐大挑戰)” to solve a series of problems and create an artifact to demonstrate their knowledge and skills related to STEM.
-
NO training and NO preparation are required while students can acquire new knowledge, skills and insights into STEM education.
Date:
8th July, 2016 (Friday, whole day)
Venue:
The Education University of Hong Kong (Tai Po campus)
Eligibility for application:
-
S.5 & S.6 students could form teams of four to participate in the event. Each team could comprise four S5 and/or S6 students in any combination.
-
Each team should comprise students taking the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and ICT so that the team should be able to solve problems related to all these four areas. All members are expected to have studied core mathematics.
-
All schools are invited to nominate one to four teams.
