English Every where
English Every where
It has been an eventful time for English at ECLC! For the first time ever, we have been able
to bring our curriculum themes into the English classroom (and sometimes out of it!). We
thought it would be a good time to look back at the year so far and share some of the
highlights.
Starting from our centre and moving outwards, the K1s enjoyed making their very
own school buses, using different shapes for wheels and windows. Looking
to explore nature for our next topic, the K2s ventured into EdUHK’s Eco
gardens, looking for creatures to use in their amusing animal similes. For
the K3s, the topic on “Our Community” gave them an opportunity to reflect
on things they can do for people around them. They took the chance to fill a
good deeds box with notes on how they helped others. The Nursery class put these
principles into practice when they helped wash the bicycles for the rest of the school.
Holiday season gave lots of students a chance to visit new places for the first time and they back
memories and new experiences. Soon enough, our English classes were travelling the world too! From the
K2s packing their suitcases for India to the K3s taking holiday photos in Japan, ECLC became a little hub of
the world.
Coming back closer to home, ECLC students learnt to be more mindful of our resources
and where they originate from. The crèche class tried their hand at washing the fruit and
vegetables they read about in Bunny’s Garden (and making banana milkshakes!), while
the K2s munched on some food that looked imperfect but tasted delicious. K3 students
imagine different ways of making an Anywhere Farm, growing their own plant with soil,
sunshine, water, a seed, and some rhyming words.
These are just a few of the exciting ways we have integrated our language learning with
thematic teaching. We are also incredibly proud of our updated phonics curriculum,
which has been made more intensive and more interactive. Throughout the year, our K1-
K3 students have enjoyed learning through sensory activities like making juice with the
letter “j” and nestling noodles into a letter “n”. They have honed their skills during interactive
group games like sight words snap, rhyme react, and vowel team basketball. They have tested their blending and
decoding skills with a plethora of engaging card games and puzzles.
As we look towards the end of the year and beyond, we hope to continue making our English curriculum more
enjoyable and effective for all our students.
