Offering Unit |
Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) |
Course Synopsis |
In response to the urgent need to improve sustainability literacy among students from different cultures, this course aims to explore sustainable development through a global lens, as well as the more specific contexts of Hong Kong and Uganda. Under the guidance and supervision of staff from Watoto villages —a sustainable charity organization in Uganda — students will use their knowledge of sustainability and the local community to devise and execute a series of co-curricular activities for young learners in Watoto villages. During the implementation period, students will co-teach their curriculum with the local youth leaders in Watoto villages. Throughout this process, students are expected to undergo intensive consultation sessions with the supervisors, peer-evaluation, self-reflection and rounds of trial-and-error to aid their process of development. By the end of the course, alongside the course deliverables, students will gain a practical understanding of sustainability, lesson design and reflective learning. This course focuses on 2 key SDG’s, Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). Other determinants for health and well-being, such as reduction of poverty (SDG 1) and reduction of inequality (SDG 10), and health justice (SDG 16), will also be discussed. By working with Watoto villages and focusing on sustainable development and the SDGs, students will develop a deeper understanding of global issues and contribute meaningfully to building a more sustainable future. |
