Dr Michael Yeung Clinches Prestigious International Awards at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

2025-05-09

Dr Michael Yeung Kin-chung, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology (PS) at EdUHK, earned two major international awards at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva. The event was held in Switzerland from April 9 to 13, 2025.

Dr Yeung’s project, “A Hybrid EEG-fNIRS Neurofeedback Application for Brain Training for Autistic Children,” was honored with both a Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations and an International Special Merit Award. The innovative project seeks to develop a state-of-the-art hybrid EEG-fNIRS system for multimodal neurofeedback training that targets cognitive, emotional, and social functions in autistic individuals. By employing validated feedback stimuli, reward delivery mechanisms, and progressive loading, the system is designed to maximise efficacy and engagement. This comprehensive, technology-based neurorehabilitation approach is poised not only to benefit autistic children by reducing healthcare costs but also to boost Hong Kong’s burgeoning medical technology industry. In recognition of his groundbreaking work, Dr Yeung secured funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) in 2024 to further advance the research.

At the exhibition, the EdUHK delegation showcased seven groundbreaking inventions developed by interdisciplinary teams from various departments. These pioneering projects spanned fields ranging from artificial intelligence and biomaterials to neuroscience, sports, and educational technologies. Collectively, they garnered nine prestigious awards, including two Special Merit Awards, one Gold Medal with Jury Congratulations, one Gold Medal, three Silver Medals, and two Bronze Medals.
