Dr Law Kam Yee is committed to combining his pedagogy with research to cultivate inquiry-based learning. Having infused a wide range of research expertise and rich experience in his teaching of courses across the fields of Hong Kong studies, China studies, Asian studies and Liberal studies, and through engaging professional practitioners in seminars and sharing, he amazes his students with his thorough understanding and wide knowledge.

He believes that “passion” is the keyword for quality teaching. Bearing this in mind, he can ignite the self-motivation of students, and keep them in eager pursuit of learning. As a teacher, he regards students’ self-learning as the primary goal, but also pays close attention to their progress so that he can facilitate their learning process. He finds it important to connect student learning with real life experience, thus integrating his teaching in the classroom with co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

By devoting his time and energy to teaching and pastoral care for students, Dr Law’s courses are designed to inspire and promote students’ appreciation of different perspectives. He is dedicated to adopting impactful teaching practices, and selectively uses popular culture material to inspire students’ sense of humanism. He has been a proactive organiser and principal advisor of cross-societal learning activities. Moreover, he continuously seeks to enhance the teaching through on-going reflection.

Students value Dr Law’s ability to inspire and build their critical thinking, analytical skills and value reflection. He has consistently received very high Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) scores. He is also respected by colleagues, as evident by the comment “Everyone in the classroom could feel Dr Law’s great enthusiasm…had great impact on students’ learning.” His outstanding teaching was fully recognised by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (now the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences), which awarded him a Certificate of Merit in 2010/11.

In addition to maintaining his prolific publication record, including book chapters, edited books and refereed journal articles, Dr Law is proactively engaged in various research projects on the development of teaching scholarship. He has also provided training consultancy to external bodies.
