Abstract:

Re-conceptualizing learning and assessment activities for life-long learning: the use of media reports as learning and assessment tools

The measure of good teaching is in the learning that takes place. Learning is meaningful only if it is sustainable, available to students beyond the examination, and socially and professionally relevant. Learning that is reproductive, short-term, and lacking in social relevance is of little or no value to students.

A learning and assessment practice that I have developed to help achieve life-long learning goals replaces teacher-designed learning and assessment activities with materials and activities consisting of recent, media-sourced news items. It will be argued that news-based, hence authentic learning and assessment activities are more likely to be taken seriously by students, more likely to encourage students to make connections between their course readings and classroom studies and the community and the world around them, and will help students to develop the habit and hence the skill of seeing relevance and identifying solutions in unflagged fact situations.

Abstract:

E-Learning in Higher Education: Thinking beyond Technology

The integration of e-learning technology into teaching and learning is not a simple technological adoption. Rather it is a process both complex and innovative, which encompasses multi-faceted consideration in curriculum content, pedagogy, use of technology, teacher practices, student practices, assessment, learning outcomes, and cultural settings. Based on a variety of case studies, this presentation will portray different e-learning pedagogical approaches and their challenges in blended learning contexts. It will also discuss the issues involved in the design and development of e-learning pedagogical innovations and whether they could bring about the predicted ‘paradigm shift’ and ‘innovative disruption’ in higher education.
