Message from the President
With the legacy inherited from the College days, the Institute has a fine and long-standing tradition of working in close partnership with the school community. Such partnership, which sees either the HKIEd supporting the schools and schools supporting the HKIEd, works not for our benefit alone, but rather for the benefit of the entire education community. Our collaborative efforts very often allow us to focus on the concrete issues and problems which affect schools in Hong Kong. I know these bilateral working relationships between the HKIEd and the school community will continue to thrive in the years to come.

Visit by the Research Grants Council

Also falling within the first six months of the year is the first visit of the Research Grants Council (RGC) on 15 June 2006. The visit was intended to give the Council a first-hand experience of the Institute's research capacity through on-site meetings and reviews. On the day, the 35-member RGC visiting team had an intensive but comprehensive overview of the Institute's research activities, through meetings with our academic staff as well as reviewing our research output. The members left with a positive perception on what they examined on the day.

The initial impression was reconfirmed with the Council's formal letter to me dated 16 August 2006. In its letter, the RGC commended and stated that "The Institute has clearly articulated its goal of a greater emphasis on research and scholarship........ RGC Members were also impressed by the high level of morale and the commitment of the faculty members to engage in quality research/scholarship in addition to the heavy teaching and service obligations........ RGC Members were impressed by [the Institute's] commitment to research and scholarship which have a strong applied dimension to meet the needs of local community."
