Welcome to the Department of International Education!
Our Department of International Education and Lifelong Learning was established in 2010 and was renamed the Department of International Education in 2019 to better reflect its strengths in four key areas: (1) comparative and international education; (2) life and values education in global context; (3) teacher education for international schools; and (4) education studies in international perspective. Our colleagues have expertise in the fields of ethics, lifelong learning, higher education, intercultural education, international school education, philosophy of education, sociology of education, education for sustainable development, and professional and vocational education and training.
Our teaching programmes prepare pre-service and in-service teachers for careers not only in local and international schools, but also as educational researchers and leaders in professional practice. We offer undergraduate minors in Teaching and Learning in International Schools and Education Issues in Global Context. We also have Masters programmes in Life and Values Education and Global Studies in Education, as well as Doctoral programmes in Life and Values Education and International and Comparative Education.
We are part of the Faculty of Education and Human Development in a university that is consistently ranked among the top 20 in the world in Education. As such, we aim to be a world-leading academic department where our teaching, research, community engagement, and international consultancies and partnerships are based in values and commitments that are international in perspective: global citizenship, international-mindedness, sustainable development, and planetary stewardship. We are committed in our teaching, research, and service to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Four, to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. We run student study tours internationally that focus on such themes as poverty reduction and biodiversity protection. We do all of this as part of our commitment to the betterment of society through education locally, regionally and internationally.
