This programme is suitable for individuals aspiring to pursue careers in cultural heritage education and management or Xiqu fields.

The MA(CHEM) is a 24-credit-point (cp) programme comprising 8 courses, including 4 core courses and 4 specialisation courses from one of the specialisations (3 credit points/course).

In 2025/26, the MA(CHEM) offers the following specialisations.

Heritage Education and Management Specialisation

  • Focuses on cultural tourism and heritage management, equipping students with skills for heritage preservation and management
  • Explores heritage management topics and best practices for preservation, promotion, and transmission of cultural heritage

Xiqu Specialisation

  • Provides in-depth study of traditional Chinese performing arts, particularly Xiqu and Peking Opera, offering historical, cultural, and artistic insights
  • Includes practical training to enhance performance, preservation, and management skills

Putonghua (supplemented by Cantonese and English)

  • Applicants should normally hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent. A degree related to cultural/ history/ arts/ education/ management or 2-year relevant working experience is preferable.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.
  • Applicants should demonstrate high proficiency in spoken and written Chinese. If Chinese is not their native language and the medium of instruction of their degree was not Chinese, they must pass the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Level 6, or possess equivalent abilities.

Heritage Education and Management Specialisation: HK$155,000

Xiqu Specialisation: HK$180,000

Tuition fees paid are normally not refundable or transferable.

Classes in the same or different semester(s) may be scheduled on weekday daytime/evenings, weekends and/or during long holidays at the Tai Po Campus / Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / North Point Study Centre / Kowloon Tong Satellite Study Centre and/or other locations as decided by the University.
