TIME Magazine Features Prof. Kapur's Work on Productive Failure

2016-03-22

Professor Kapur Manu at the Department of Psychological Studies shares his research findings on “Productive failure leads to faster learning” in the TIME Magazine.  In his research, students are presented with unfamiliar concepts and asked to work through them right away, without being taught the method or solution. The findings have shown that this method leads students to significantly outperform those who learn through traditional instruction and problem-solving. Professor Kapur believes that struggle activates parts of the brain that trigger deeper learning. Students have to figure out three critical things: what they know, the limits of what they know, and exactly what they do not know. The research shows that using a low structure initial activity in inquiry learning can result in better learning outcomes than using an initial high structure activity. For details, please click here.
