Collaboration between EPL@EdUHK and British Universities

2023-08-31

A team of colleagues from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) travelled to the United Kingdom to meet with colleagues from the University of Southampton School of Education and the University of Strathclyde Institute of Education. Led by Dr Haiyan QIAN, the team included Dr Hayes TANG, Dr Ewan WRIGHT and Dr Miron BHOWMIK.

The team visited the University of Southampton School of Education and had a daylong meeting with senior colleagues from the School including Dr Marcus GRACE, Head of School; Dr Julie REYNOLDS, Deputy Head of School, Education; Dr Christian BOKHOVE, Deputy Head of School, Research; Dr Gary MORRIS, Director, Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise; Dr Michael TOMLINSON, Co-director, Leadership, Educational Effectiveness and Policy (LEEP); Dr John SCHULZ, Academic Lead, Southampton Online; Dr Taehee CHOI, Director of Internationalisation. Multiple collaboration ideas were explored and developed in the areas of research, teaching and knowledge exchange. First, a joint webinar will be organised in January/February 2024 to identify how colleagues can help each other in their respective preparation for upcoming RAE or REF exercises. The webinar will also provide a platform to discuss small-scale collaborative research, forming the basis for future research funding applications. Second, the School of Education has provisionally agreed to be a partner of a conference entitled “Impact for Educational Equity: Dialogues and Pathways for Diversity and Inclusion” that EPL will organise in April/May 2024. Third, EPL and the School of Education have agreed to collaborate on a series of webinars to enable students in educational leadership master's degree programmes to share perspectives and experiences on topics such as professional learning communities and leading organisational change.

In addition, the team visited Glasgow to present their research at the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) held at the University of Glasgow. As part of the trip, the team held a meeting with four colleagues from the University of Strathclyde Institute of Education including Dr David LEWIN, Senior Lecturer; Dr Paul ADAMS, Senior Lecturer; Dr Karsten KENKLIES, Senior Lecturer; and Dr Jane ESSEX, Reader. Discussion was held around how Strathclyde colleagues will contribute to EPL’s conference next year. They have provisionally agreed that one of their experts relevant to the conference theme will participate as a speaker.

EPL is actively pursuing collaborations with prestigious universities around the world as part of efforts to promote the internationalisation agenda of the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD). Concrete collaboration such as these with British Universities will certainly enhance our reputation locally, regionally and globally.
