Time Capsule Opening cum 25th Anniversary Commemorative Publication Launch
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a ceremony today (27 May) to open a time capsule placed on campus in the 1990s, unearthing a number of items and documents that bear testimony to the transformation of the University.
Among the historical items preserved in the capsule was a letter written by Founding Council Chairman Dr Simon Ip Sik-on in 1996 to the current Council Chairman. During the ceremony, Dr Ip passed the letter, which set out the vision and mission of the then Institute, to Professor Frederick Ma Si-hang, the current Council Chairman of the University.
Other preserved items include the master development plan of the Tai Po Campus in the 1990s, handbooks and prospectuses of education courses, a 1995 graduate register, the HKIEd Ordinance, a video tape, and newspaper supplements, among others.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor Ma said, “Seeing everyone coming together reminds me that education is all about people. By teaching with heart and soul, teachers, rather than technological tools, make an indelible mark on students. I believe teachers are irreplaceable. Their passion and commitment are what count.”
President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung said, “Starting as a mono-technic institute, we have come a long way. We celebrated our successful U-title bid three years ago. Today, we are recognised locally, regionally and internationally as a flagship of excellence in teacher education and related disciplines. Over the decades, we have stayed true to our core mission, nurturing generations of professional, caring and committed educator.”
On the same occasion, EdUHK launched its 25th Anniversary Commemorative Publication to pay tribute to teachers everywhere. The publication features the stories of 25 individuals in four chapters:

- “Blessed to have a mentor for life”, on the influence of lifetime mentors: the stories of cycling world champions and their dream enabler Dr Ada Ma Wai-wing; Mr Alan Tam Wing-lun and protégé Mr Gordon Lee Chun-lok; and the budding relationship between Dr Pamela Leung Pui-wan and non-Chinese speaking student Mr Mohsin Khan;
- “Family of educators”, on the power of inheritance: the family stories of father-and-son Principal Chu King-yuen and Principal Chu Tsz-wing; a mother–daughter alumna duo who inspire each other as teachers; and Filipino sisters who work hard to become teachers; and
