“Less Plastic” Point – 3Rs & 3Cs Carnival at EdUHK
To promote proper plastic resources management, the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised the “‘Less Plastic’ Point – 3Rs & 3Cs Carnival” at its Tai Po campus today (14 October), attracting nearly 200 teachers, students and parents.
Supported by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), the CEES kicked off the two-year programme “Plastic Resources Education – 3Rs & 3Cs” in September 2016 to implement plastic resources education and plastic recycling in 40 primary schools in Hong Kong. Since its implementation, over 470 kg of plastic waste has been collected and transferred to local recycling centres or recycling companies for recycling.
The carnival is one of the major highlights of the programme. Delivering an opening speech at the event was Professor Winnie So Wing-mui, Director of the CEES. “We are very encouraged by the active participation of schools in plastic resources education. As the event title ‘Less plastic’ implies, we wish to convey the message that we should reduce our use of plastic and handle it properly,” she said.
Dr Stephen Chow Cheuk-fai, Associate Professor in the Department of Science and Environment Studies of EdUHK, said, “Plastic resources education is not limited to primary students. Our goal is to educate their families and the whole community through the interaction of students with their families and friends. This event will provide an opportunity for the parents to directly participate and learn.”
Over 30 booths for exhibitions and games were set up by students from nearly 20 schools and green groups to promote plastic resources education and show students’ works. The prizes for the “Design of 8-in-1 Recycling Bin” and the “Production of Promotional Video” competitions conducted earlier were also awarded during the event.
