EdUHK to Present Honorary Fellowships to Two Distinguished Individuals

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) will present Honorary Fellowships to two distinguished individuals on 30 June (Friday), in recognition of their remarkable contributions to the University, the education sector and the wider community.

The recipients (in alphabetical order of surnames) are:

•    Ms Pau Chun-ping
•    Mr Dieter Yih, JP

Ms Pau Chun-ping

Ms Pau Chun-ping, Chairperson of the Fung Sun Kwan Chinese Arts Foundation (the Foundation), has dedicated herself to education and research in Chinese classical studies. Through promoting education, she strives to cultivate talent for the benefit of the wider community.

Ms Pau – alongside her beloved late husband Mr Fung Sun-kwan – has worked tirelessly to foster traditional culture and advance education in China since 2007. Devoted to moral education, they have staged a series of international symposiums on Chinese classical education over the years in nine cities nationwide. Their efforts have eventually led to an expanded network to 38 classical study centres across the country, benefitting over 10,000 students.

In 2010, the Foundation made a significant contribution by rescuing a collection of precious Qin Dynasty bamboo and wooden slips, and subsequently donated to Peking University for preservation of Chinese culture.

To support local education, a range of scholarships was initially set up at various tertiary institutions. In 2015, the Foundation funded the establishment of the Centre for Chinese Classical Learning at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2016, it also provided funding to support the Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education at EdUHK, which promotes life education initiatives. In 2018, Mr and Mrs Fung assisted in the nurturing of talent by donating to the China Education Development Foundation, so it could establish the Confucius Chinese Classics Fund. They founded the Institute for Chinese Classics Studies at Tsinghua University, and subsequently the Centre for Chinese Classical Education at EdUHK, enabling the launch of Chinese culture projects in the Greater Bay Area.

In 2019, Ms Pau carried the aspirations of her late husband Chairman Mr Fung Sun-kwan, taking on full responsibility for promoting traditional Chinese culture. Starting in 2021, the Foundation established the Four Virtues and Eight Excellent Deeds Award in primary and secondary schools across Hong Kong, aiming to encourage moral education and enhance cultural confidence. In early 2023, the Foundation launched the Martial Arts Campus project, under the umbrella of the Five Disciplines project to cultivate students’ resilience, physical fitness and their holistic development.

Mr Dieter Yih, JP

Mr Yih is a distinguished member of the legal profession, who is dedicated to the betterment of society, especially regarding enhancement to financial regulations and education.

Having conquered the highly demanding path towards qualification in England, Mr Yih returned to Hong Kong in the late 1980s. He went on to qualify in Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore and focused on corporate law, particularly in areas such as capital markets, corporate finance, and mergers and acquisitions. In a matter of just six years, he co-founded Hong Kong’s first independent boutique corporate and securities law firm, breaking the tradition of legal representation in these areas being predominately provided by large international firms.

A strong believer in the benefits of education, Mr Yih established a scholarship scheme in the late 1990s and personally sponsored students to study law at his alma mater, King’s College London. He was a Member and then Deputy Chairman of the Council of EdUHK. During his decade-long service at EdUHK Council, he was a staunch supporter of the University, ready to contribute on different fronts at all times.

From 2016 to 2022, Mr Yih was also a member of the Education Commission, whose role is to advise the Government on the overall development of education. Currently, he is a member of both the University Grants Committee, and the Quality Education Fund’s Steering Committee.
