Nearly 150 students and teachers from five local secondary schools completed a two-day Cornerstone Maths summer camp today (25 June) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Cornerstone Maths was first introduced in Hong Kong from the United States and the United Kingdom in 2017. In the 2018/19 academic year, the University’s Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC) successfully implemented the platform in 21 secondary schools. Starting this year, the University will launch the Chinese version of Cornerstone Maths, further extending the reach and impact of this innovative platform to benefit more local schools.

Attending this year’s summer camp were students and teachers from The ELCHK Yuen Long Lutheran Secondary School, Sha Tin Government Secondary School, Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School, S.K.H. St. Mary's Church Mok Hing Yiu College, and SKH Tsang Shiu Tim Secondary School. With the supervision and guidance of EdUHK student mentors, the participating students were able to learn and grasp key mathematical ideas and concepts related to linear functions, through integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and representations and simulations, such as visual and interactive graphs, tables and equations.

EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung said, ‘I am delighted with the success of Cornerstone Maths. EdUHK has long been committed to promoting e-learning and innovative education, and the success of Cornerstone Maths encourages our staff and students to develop more creative educational approaches that offer a pleasurable learning experience for the next generation.’

The Director of the LTTC, Professor Kong Siu-cheung, said, ‘Cornerstone Maths has received a positive response from local schools in just a short period of time. In response to growing demand, we are translating the learning materials and workbooks into Chinese to benefit more students in the coming years.’

EdUHK’s Cornerstone Maths project in Hong Kong was made possible by a generous donation of HK$10 million earlier by the Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF), which covered a scholarship scheme for the competitive recruitment of top talent, as well as innovation in teaching and learning through e-learning platforms.

The masterminds behind Cornerstone Maths are Professor Celia Hoyles and Professor Richard Noss of the University College London (UCL) Knowledge Lab, who began their research in the 1990s on the use of dynamic representations to change mathematics education. Cornerstone Maths was subsequently developed by world-renowned SRI International, in collaboration with the UCL Knowledge Lab, with funding support from the LKSF.
