EdUHK Hosts Symposium on Teacher Studies and Development

Experts from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and the United States gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (10 October) for the first day of an international symposium titled “Creating a Blueprint for an International Improvement Community for Teachers”.

Supported by Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the two-day symposium serves as the inaugural event of the four-year Teacher Studies and Development Project (2016-2019) which aims to create a collaborative framework in exploring critical dimensions of teachers and their work in order to provide a deeper understanding of the world’s teaching profession and the environment that affects its changing nature.

The project will also lead to research that informs teacher practices and teacher-related policies, to nurture teacher-researchers to enable teacher self-reliance, and to provide multi-site teacher education programmes that combine professional development with reflection on teaching practice.

Delivering his welcome speech at the opening, Professor Cheung said, “In the globalized context in Hong Kong, there are calls for the ongoing advancement of teacher education, including more continuing professional development and school leadership programmes, and for assurance that we meet international benchmarks, with a view to achieving educational excellence to improve student learning.”

“The Project will establish an international platform to share research findings, evidence of good practice, and experimental ideas for improvement,” he added.

Among the keynote speakers were Professor A. Lin Goodwin, Evenden Professor of Education, and Vice Dean at Teachers College, Columbia University; Professor Allan Walker, Joseph Lau Chair Professor of International Educational Leadership, EdUHK; Professor Anna Kindler, Senior Advisor International, Faculty of Education, The University of British Columbia; and Professor John Lee Chi-kin.

Professor Simone White, Assistant Dean (International and Engagement), Faculty of Education, Queensland University of Technology; and Professor Chiu Chi-shing, Department of Education Policy and Leadership, EdUHK will be the keynote speakers on the second day of the symposium, which will be held tomorrow (11 October).

Symposium topics include teacher quality assurance, school leader development, internationalization and new pedagogies. The format allows the sharing of insights and experience from different regions.
