EdUHK Hosts ‘Hong Kong Secondary School Belt and Road Quiz Competition’ to Enhance Secondary School Students' Understanding of the Belt and Road Initiative

To help secondary school students to broaden their global perspectives, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised the ‘Hong Kong Secondary School Belt and Road Quiz Competition’ on 20 September on its Tai Po campus. The aim of the event was to encourage students to think globally, gain a deeper understanding of key policies and agreements related to the Belt and Road Initiative, and explore various aspects—including the economy, geography, culture, and history—across different regions, thereby empowering them to seize future development opportunities.

The competition was hosted by the School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO) of EdUHK and supported by the Belt and Road Office of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau. Co-organisers included the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council, the New Territories School Heads Association, the Kowloon Region School Heads Association, the Hong Kong Island School Heads Association, the Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council and the Association of Principals of Government Secondary Schools. Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) was invited to serve as the media partner of this competition.

Officiating at the ceremony were the Commissioner for Belt and Road Mr Nicholas Ho Lik-chi, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Associate Vice President (Internationalisation) Professor Lo Sing-kai, Director of SPFEO Dr Kevin Kam Wai-keung, Associate Director of SPFEO Ms Mandy Au Yuen-yee, Professional Consultant of SPFEO Ms Langton Cheung Yung-pong, Chairperson of the New Territories School Heads Association Mr Chu Wai-lam, Assistant Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council Mr Ronald Hui Kin-yip, Supervisory Board Member of the Kowloon Region School Heads Association Mr Ng Yat-ming, and External Affairs Secretary of the Hong Kong Direct Subsidy Scheme Schools Council Mr Kwan Wing-bun. Also in attendance to show their support were Ms Wong Wan-chu, the Honorary School Partnership Advisor of SPFEO and Mr Mak Wai-lun, School Partnership Advisor.

In his speech, Mr Nicholas Ho Lik-chi stated that Hong Kong had unique geographical, economic, and cultural advantages, positioning it as the functional platform for the Belt and Road Initiative. He encouraged young people in Hong Kong to recognise their own strengths and roles, and to make the most of their talents. He also expressed his wish that the participating students keep pace with the times, be bold in innovation, lay a solid foundation for the future, and contribute to Hong Kong, the nation, and various regions along the Belt and Road.

In his welcome remarks, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said, ‘Through this competition, we hope to enable the younger generation to gain a deeper understanding of the background and development of the Belt and Road Initiative as gateway for regional and international economic cooperation, and to encourage them to think from multiple perspectives, cultivating both an international outlook and a sense of responsibility. The youth are the hope of the nation; understanding and participating in regional and global cooperation will open up broader horizons for their future development.’

The preliminary round was conducted as a closed-book, team-based test, with 160 senior secondary students from 40 schools taking part. The questions covered eight categories: History and Background Knowledge, Economy and Trade, Politics and International Relations, Education, Culture, and Society, Technology and Innovation, Environment and Sustainable Development, Geography and Transportation, and Belt and Road Trivia. The objective was to guide students to explore the Belt and Road Initiative from multiple perspectives and to extend discussions from policy matters to everyday life and innovative development.

The following five school teams (listed in alphabetical order) qualified for the final round, scheduled to take place on 1 November. The awards presentation ceremony will be held concurrently on the same day.
