EdUHK Hosts ‘Heart-warming Figures in School’ Sharing Activity Celebrating the Selfless Dedication of Teachers and Staff
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has organised the ‘Heart-warming Figures in School’ sharing activity. Students from special schools, kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools across Hong Kong were invited to share stories of individuals within their schools who have touched their hearts with selfless dedication and care. It aims to recognise and appreciate the love, care and nurturing provided by teachers and other staff members of the schools, acknowledging their tireless contributions to the growth of the next generation.
The activity attracted nearly 2,300 entries submitted by 81 schools. They were divided into four categories: special schools, kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools. The judging panel selected the ‘Top 10 Heart-warming Figures in School’ for each school category from the numerous outstanding entries. During today's (13 August) award presentation ceremony, several student awardees and their featured school staff shared their stories.
Attending the ceremony were EdUHK President cum Director of the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation (AEDI) and the Academy for Applied Policy Studies and Education Futures (AAPSEF) Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, Vice President (Academic) cum AAPSEF Executive Co-Director Professor May Cheng May-hung, AEDI Executive Co-Director Professor Kenneth Sin Kuen-fung, Librarian Dr Sidney Cheng Po-ying, Director of School Partnership and Field Experience Dr Kevin Kam Wai-keung, Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education Executive Co-Director Ms Mandy Au Yuen-yee, Centre for Classical Chinese Education Executive Co-Director Mr Chau Lap, Hong Kong Museum of Education Curator Ms Kevinna Deng Ying-yu, Director of Communications and Engagement Ms Helen Gai Huixia, as well as seniors in education and retired principals who serve as judges for this event Ms Chan Chui-yin, Mr Kwok Chi-hung, Mr Tang Kwai-tai, Mr Wong Kwok-kong and Dr Yu Huen.
Among the stories told was that of Katrine Lun Hoi-ching, a kindergarten student, highlighted the profound care displayed by her school Principal Leung Kit-ming. She recalled Principal Leung visiting the families of all graduating students, attentively listening to the thoughts of parents and children and spending quality time with the children. Through her actions, she conveyed to each family that the school is a strong support system for the children. This personal visit becomes a transmission of love, “just like seedlings growing strong into budding flowers” Katrine said.
Yu Zhuo-yin, a newly arrived primary school student, who explained how her teacher, Ms Tam Wai-fun, not only patiently and wisely guided her in the classroom but also encouraged her to do her best without putting too much pressure on herself. With her companionship and love, the teacher helped the child overcome cultural and language barriers, making her feel warmth and truly integrated into her new environment.
Secondary school student Claire Elizabeth Lo An-yi, praised Ms Leung Siu-ching, her school janitor, who always starts each day with a smile and a simple greeting. Every small gesture of care she makes becomes an invisible education in the hearts of the students, teaching them the importance of kindness and love.
This activity specifically focuses on the warm contributors within the school, including principals, teachers, janitors, school bus drivers and more, each of whom serves as a silent guide for students at different stages of their growth. Through this activity, EdUHK hopes to encourage students to discover and share heart-warming stories around them, letting their stories inspire everyone to move forward with positivity.
Professor John Lee Chi-Kin said, “These heart-warming stories vividly highlight the theme of EdUHK's 30th Anniversary - ‘Education Talent Virtue’. We firmly believe that the core of education lies not only in imparting knowledge, but also in shaping character and cultivating social responsibility. Let us express our high respect to those in the education sector who toil selflessly, giving love and care.”
All the winning entries from this activity are also being exhibited at the ‘Heritage of Teacher Education in Hong Kong: An Exhibition Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of EdUHK’, currently being held at the Central Market. The exhibition showcases EdUHK's journey and fruitful contributions over the past 30 years, particularly its efforts in teacher ethics and values education, as well as the excellence of traditional Chinese culture.
