EdUHK Hosts Cultural Showcase 2024 Promoting Campus Internationalisation and Cultural Integration
The Global Affairs Office of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted the Cultural Showcase 2024 today (17 October) to foster campus internationalisation and cultural integration. Students from over a dozen countries and regions, including mainland China, Finland, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, the Netherlands, as well as local students, came together to celebrate and share their unique cultural heritages at EdUHK’s Central Plaza.
At the event, President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin delivered the opening remarks, stating, “The EdUHK Cultural Showcase offers a wonderful opportunity for both local and international students to explore the diverse cultures of various countries and regions in a relaxed atmosphere, thanks to the students’ impressive performances and unique booths. This is truly a valuable experience. EdUHK will continue to promote similar activities to provide students with rich opportunities for international learning and cultural exchange.”
The event began with an electric guitar performance by a Hong Kong student who grew up in Jamaica, setting an energetic tone for the day's event. Performances also included a traditional Dai dance by mainland exchange students and local students and a lively Korean pop dance by undergraduates, showcasing EdUHK's rich cultural diversity.
Throughout the day, international students demonstrated their creativity by not only wearing traditional costumes but also promoting their cultures in innovative ways at culturally-themed booths, such as playing games and sharing their hometown food. Mainland exchange students showcased exhibits featuring traditional Chinese clothing, Quanzhou flower hairpin art, and lacquer fan culture. Exchange students from Spain engaged attendees with a traditional jump rope game at their booth, awarding carnations, the national flower of Spain, as prizes.
To further enrich the experience, the Global Affairs Office invited artisans skilled in crafting flour dolls and sugar paintings to demonstrate these local traditional arts to students from around the world.
The Cultural Showcase not only fostered exchange and understanding among students from different cultural backgrounds but also underscored EdUHK's dedication to creating an international and multicultural campus environment. EdUHK looks forward to welcoming more students from around the globe, making it a hub for multicultural harmony.
