EdUHK Holds Topping-Out Ceremony for New Academic Building A New Milestone for the New Year

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a topping-out ceremony for the New Academic Building (new building) today (24 January) on its Tai Po campus, marking a new milestone in the development of the University. The new building will incorporate technological applications for “Education Futures”, focusing on advancing fields such as STEM and AI education. This further enhances EdUHK’s role in driving educational innovation and preparing for diversified opportunities to take the University to new heights.

The eight-storey New Academic Building has a net operating floor area of 7,600 square metres, providing additional learning and research space for the growing needs of faculty and students. It features comprehensive teaching and research facilities, including a 400-seat multi-functional auditorium, 10 classrooms, two virtual classrooms, laboratories with enhanced multimedia equipment, ancillary research space, as well as learning commons. The rooftop even features a basketball court, reflecting the University’s commitment to being an Elite Athlete Friendly University.

Officiating at the event were Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar and President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin. They were joined by Deputy Council Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung, Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, and other members of the management.

In his opening remarks, Dr Wong extended his gratitude to all relevant stakeholders for making the project possible. “The new building incorporates cutting-edge educational technology to support interactive teaching and learning while providing additional learning and research space,” he said. “It creates an environment that is full of flexibility, collaboration, humanistic care, and inspires productivity and creativity, further strengthening EdUHK's role in shaping the future of education.”

During the ceremony, Professor Lee gave a brief review of the development of EdUHK over the past 30 years. He said, “The new building will combine with those already in use across the rest of our campus, as well as our study centres in North Point, Tseung Kwan O, and the Satellite Study Centre in Kowloon Tong, to align with our ‘Education Futures’ approach, to make the University more inclusive, innovative and interactive.”

The construction of the New Academic Building began in 2022, and is the University’s first major campus development project since the inauguration of its Tai Po campus in 1997. Additionally, the new building has achieved a Gold Rating in the BEAM Plus 1st Provisional Assessment, underscoring the University’s commitment to sustainable development.
