The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has given congratulations to elite athlete student Chiu Hin-chun, who is on the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management Programme, for winning a gold medal in the Lightweight Men’s Single Sculls at the 2024 World Rowing Cup II in Lucerne, Switzerland. Chiu Hin-chun is the first rowing athlete in Hong Kong to win gold in international competition.

Delighted by the triumph, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin sent a message to extend his warm congratulations. He said, “Hin-chun has demonstrated extraordinary athletic ability and a spirit of perseverance, setting a new milestone for sport in Hong Kong. The entire EdUHK community, including students, faculty, and staff, take great pride in his achievements and wishes him continued success in his sporting career.”

On joining EdUHK in 2017, Chiu Hin-chun first studied for a Bachelor of Health Education (Honours). He is currently pursuing a Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management. He was also appointed as the Elite Athlete Friendly University Ambassador in 2021. Chiu has also won several awards in public competitions, including a bronze medal in rowing (Single Sculls) at the 19th Asian Games held in Hangzhou in 2022.

In its pledge as an ‘Elite Athlete Friendly University’, EdUHK is committed to fostering dual career development for elite athletes. It was the first UGC-funded institution to sign a collaborative agreement with the Hong Kong Sports Institute, providing elite athletes with an opportunity to receive university education through a flexible admissions mechanism. Since 2010, EdUHK has admitted close to 130 elite athletes to its different academic programmes.
