20th Anniversary Celebration for Primary STEM Project Exhibition at EdUHK
The 20th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony for the Primary STEM Project Exhibition (PSPE) was held today (26 June) at EdUHK, with over a hundred students from Hong Kong and other cities in the Pearl Delta Region participating. The ceremony was co-organised by the Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability (CEES) and the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), along with the Hong Kong Science Museum, Education Bureau, Hong Kong Education City Limited, and Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education.
Delivering an opening speech at the ceremony was Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President of EdUHK, who commented that the University “has been committed to promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and providing support to the local school sectors all along. Today’s event has become even more meaningful as the 20th Anniversary of the SAR and that of the PSPE coincide.”
Founded in 1997, the PSPE is the largest annual event featuring primary school STEM projects. Last month, approximately 170 STEM projects on green living from over 1,000 students at local schools and schools from other cities in the Pearl Delta Region were showcased at the 20th PSPE.
“In the last two decades, PSPE has provided students from Hong Kong and other cities in the Pearl Delta Region with a one-of-a-kind learning platform, encouraging hands-on practice and exchange in the spirit of promoting scientific exploration”, said Professor Winnie So Wing-mui, Chairperson of the PSPE Organising Committee and Director of CEES.
At the event, Professor Tsui Lap-chee, President and founding member of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong, Mr Gyver Lau Kwok-leung from a local secondary school and Ms Sylvia Chan May-kuen from a local primary school served as adjudicators, alongside Professor So, to shortlist the best three STEM projects under the main theme of “Green and Simple Urban Living”.
The winners of the Adjudicators Award at the May event competed for the 20th Anniversary Award today, showcasing their STEM projects at EdUHK. The three projects receiving the 20th Anniversary Award were St. Paul’s Co-educational College Primary School’s “Food Heater Box”, Tin Shui Wai Catholic Primary School’s “Food Waste Anti-mosquito” and Sun Fong Chung Primary School’s “Natural Hair Dye”.
The event also featured a STEM forum on “Why and How to Enhance STEM Education”, during which principals and other educators discussed their experience of STEM education at the management level.
