QEF Study on SEN Student Behaviors and Affective Development

You and your representatives are cordially invited to attend the Dissemination Conference this Saturday (27 May) for a Quality Education Fund (QEF) Project entitled “Analysing the Problem Behaviors of SEN Students and Supporting their Affective and Social Development” to be held at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

Affective and social development has a significant influence on students with special education needs (SEN) in terms of physical and mental health, academic performance, character building and social adaptation. It also plays an important role in SEN students’ quality of daily and study life.

With the support of the QEF, the Salvation Army Shek Wu School (SHEKWUSCH) initiated a research study in 2016 on SEN student behavior and affective and social development, in collaboration with Professor Magdalena Mok Mo-ching and Dr Ho Fuk-chuen of EdUHK. With data collected through questionaires, interviews and case studies from SHEKWUSCH and five other schools for children with mild intellectual disabilities, the 18-month project aims to identify (i) problem behaviours with high prevalence rates, (ii) the reasons behind such behaviours, and (iii) effective solutions for the management of the problem behaviours. Research findings will be presented at the conference.

Mr Godwin Lai Kam-tong, Principal Assistant Secretary (Special Education) of the Education Bureau and Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, will be Honorable Guests at the conference. The principals, teachers and social workers of SHEKWUSCH and the five schools participating in the project will discuss the study outcomes and their experiences with the audience. In addition, Professor Magdalena Mok Mo-ching, Chair Professor of Assessment and Evaluation and Director of the Assessment Research Centre at EdUHK, and Dr Ho Fuk-chuen, Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Department of Special Education and Counselling at EdUHK, will give speeches.
