EdUHK Youth Tianjin Trip: Promoting Exchange, Broadening Horizons

Forty students from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) recently participated in an education trip to Tianjin, under the ‘Million Youths See the Motherland (Series): Dream-Building’ programme.   


Organised by Dynamic Youth of Greater Bay Area, the five-day itinerary included visits to several schools in Tianjin, where participants took part in in-depth exchanges with local teachers and students. They also visited many historical and cultural sites, as well as a digital economy park, deepening their understanding of Tianjin's educational, cultural and economic development.   


The EdUHK students, majoring in Education (Primary), Music Education, Early Childhood and Family Studies, and Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology, gained first-hand insights into the education system in the mainland China. Through visits to Chong Hua High School's history museum and observations of classes, they developed a more intuitive understanding of the education model in mainland Chinese high schools. At Tianjin University, they met with students from the School of Education, sharing their learning and teaching experiences. 


Bu Sin-yiu, a first-year student majoring in Education (Primary), said, “During our visit to Tianjin University, I noticed their strong emphasis on personal development, both academically and physically. For example, the university encourages students to exercise more through a ‘bonus system’. This has inspired me to focus not only on improving students' knowledge but also on their overall well-being in my future teaching career.”  


The trip also included visits to several representative sites in the city, namely the New Eight Great Villages Digital Economy Industrial Park, Tianjin Museum, National Maritime Museum of China, the Ancient Culture Street and the Tianjin Eye Ferris Wheel.   


Bu Sin-yiu said, “I am very happy to have met students with different majors and exploring the unique features of Tianjin with them. One unforgettable experience was visiting an old street in Tianjin to watch performances of crosstalk (the local traditional comic dialogue artform) and experience its culture. Interacting with the performers made me feel the warmth of the local people.” 


The visit facilitated the exchange of education between the two cities and inspired students to deeply contemplate their future studies and careers in education. Yip Wai-tan, a freshman majoring in Education (Primary) - Mathematics, said after returning to campus, “As university students in Hong Kong, we should continuously enhance our comprehensive abilities, including language, mathematics, critical thinking, and resilience. Holistic development is crucial for future teachers, as we will serve as role models for the next generation.”   


EdUHK’s Student Affairs Office (SAO), which assisted in organising this event, said they were committed to fostering globally competitive students' leadership qualities through non-formal learning activities, with a focus on curiosity, empathy, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility. This trip to Tianjin, as an important component of Global Experiential Learning programmes, provided students with valuable learning opportunities.


In the new semester, SAO will continue to launch a series of initiatives under several off-campus learning projects, including Go Global, the Dr Li Dak Sum Experiential Learning Scholarship and Global Collaboration, organised with various partner institutions, as well as online and offline global perspective seminars or workshops. These initiatives aim to further broaden EdUHK students’ international horizons and enhance their global competitiveness.
