Silver Award

(1) Education Linguistics 2.0 – The Use of Corpora in Language Teaching

Principal Investigators:

1;/2

  • Dr Angel Ma Qing
  • Dr Jackie Lee Fung-king
  • Dr Wang Lixun
  • Dr Rebecca Chen Hsueh-chu

(all from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies)

Educational Linguistics 2.0 is a data-driven approach for language teaching and learning in schools. With an open-access, corpus-aided online portal, this innovative language pedagogy fuses corpus linguistics research tools with classroom teaching.

(2) Fuzzy Talent Assessment System Based on Educational Big Data

Principal Investigator:

  • Dr Xie Haoran, Department of Mathematics and Information Technology

This project establishes comprehensive talent assessment and talent profile models by applying deep learning and big data analytic technologies to real education and talent. It enables new smart life planning and human resources applications.

(3) Fish Feeds from Food Wastes for Sustainable Fish Farming

Principal Investigator:

  • Professor Wong Ming-hung, Department of Science and Environmental Studies

The research team produced high-grade fish feed pellets by integrating food waste with supplements, such as enzymes, baker yeast and Chinese medicinal herbs. The new fish feed is effective in fostering safe and quality aquaculture at low cost, while at the same time reducing food waste and associated disposal problems.

(4) Using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) for Real-Time Emotion Assessment

Principal Investigators:

  • Professor Joanne Chung Wai-yee, Department of Health and Physical Education
  • Professor Thomas K. S. Wong (external partner)

This project uses HRV as a biomarker to develop wearable electronics and apps for objective emotion assessment of people who cannot accurately express their emotions, such as children with ASD or ADHD, and people with Parkinson’s disease or depression.

Bronze Award

(1) Domestic Screening for Age-related Hearing Loss

Principal Investigator:

  • Dr Anna Kam Chi-shan, Department of Special Education and Counselling

This project developed a tablet-based system to enable a hearing test as a routine elderly healthcare exam at the community level. It consists of pure-tone screening and a speech-in-noise test. The system is expected to spur the popularisation of a convenient community-based test for early identification of age-related hearing loss.
