EdUHK, PKU and UNESCO IITE Co-host the Third Forum on Learning Innovations and Emerging Technologies

The Global Institute for Emerging Technologies (GIET) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), the Graduate School of Education at Peking University (PKU), and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (IITE) co-hosted the third event of the Learning Innovations and Emerging Technologies Forum Series at Peking University, with support from Tencent Holdings Ltd. (Tencent) on 18 February 2025.


The forum, entitled ‘Education Digital Intelligence Forum: Promoting Equitable Educational Development through Digital Intelligent Transformation’, attracted around 200 academic researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, South Korea, Singapore and other regions. 


Professor Jia Jiyou, Head of the Department of Educational Technology (DEL) at the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and Director of the International Research Center for Education and Information (IRCEI) at PKU, hosted the opening session. 


Professor Yan Fengqiao, Dean of GSE at PKU, and Professor Zhan Tao, Director of UNESCO IITE, delivered the opening remarks. 


Professor Yan highlighted education's crucial role in facilitating social development and shared the vision of a modern education system. Professor Zhan emphasised the need to recognise the opportunities and challenges of adopting AI for education, encouraging solutions to leverage technological advancement to enhance inclusive and equitable quality education. 


The forum consisted of two panels of presentations moderated by Professor Wu Xiaomeng, Deputy Head of DEL and IRCEI at PKU, and Professor Lim Cher Ping, Chair Professor of Learning Technologies and Innovation and Co-Director of GIET at EdUHK. 


The first panel featured education leaders from the Ministry of Education of PR China, rural education facilitation project representatives from Tencent and its affiliated frontline teachers from rural China. They shared their research and empirical experience in leveraging technologies to promote equitable quality education in rural areas in China. Scholars from EdUHK delivered the second panel of presentations. They shared recent research on assessment, AI-informal language learning, and AI practices at EdUHK.

  • Ms Lian Huixin, Project Leader, The Growth Guardian Center, User Platform Department, Tencent. 
  • Dr Zhu Jinxin, Assistant Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction;
  • Dr Lee Ju Seong, Acting Head; Associate Professor, Department of English Language Education (ELE), and Ms. Lai Wan Yee Winsy, Doctoral Student, ELE; 
  • Dr Cheng Kwok Shing Gary, Executive Co-Director, Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology; Associate Co-Director, GIET; Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics and Information Technology; and
  • Dr Li Yixun Annie, Assistant Professor; Co-Chair of Departmental Research and Higher Degrees Committee, Department of Early Childhood Education, EdUHK. 

Professor Zhang Xiaoli, Professor and Secretary of the Party Committee from GSE, PKU, addressed in the closing remarks that this forum presented the deep integration of cutting-edge technologies with educational practices, contributing to global education equity and innovation. “While digital transformation brings great potential for equitable education through resource distributions and pedagogical innovations, the lack of infrastructure and the existing digital gap demand further collaborations in academia and practices, and stakeholders are encouraged to join this education expedition,” Professor Zhang said.
