The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a book launch for 'Learning and Teaching Chinese as a First Language: International Perspectives' on 27 June 2024, with the aim of promoting Chinese language studies and Chinese culture worldwide.
The new book is co-edited by Dr Sophia Lam Sin-manw, Associate Head (Learning and Teaching) cum Assistant Professor of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) at EdUHK, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin and Professor (Practice) Si Chung-mou of the Department of CHL. The book covers theories and practices of teaching Chinese as both a first and second language. It also analyses the curriculum, teaching materials, methodologies and assessments for first-language Chinese education, and explores how Chinese teaching as a second-language can draw on these insights to improve instructional effectiveness.
Additionally, the book includes various topics such as effective Chinese learning and teaching, literacy education, the use of information technology and innovative teaching methods, the acquisition of Chinese from the perspectives of Chinese linguistics and learners of Chinese, and the cultivation of Chinese Language teachers.
Professor Lee, one of the co-editors and Adjunct Chair Professor of the Department of CHL, described the new publication as a pioneer in the field, "Currently, there are not many books written in English that specifically discuss Chinese teaching as a first language. This book can be considered one of the ground-breaking publications in promoting the internationalisation of Chinese language education."
