EdUHK Hosts ‘Volunteer Appreciation and Showcase’ to Encourage Students to Contribute to the Community
The Student Affairs Office (SAO) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held the event ‘Moti-verse Volunteer Power: Student Volunteer Appreciation and Showcase’ at Central Plaza on its Tai Po campus on 7 November. The event honoured 40 students for their contribution to the community by participating in service-learning activities provided by SAO during the 2023-24 academic year.
The theme for the event’s opening ceremony was “Be Our MVP!”, encouraging students to join service teams and participate in community activities to contribute to society and promote a spirit of care.
The ceremony was officiated by Professor Bill Yeung Chi-ho, Dean of Students at EdUHK, and was attended by representatives from the government, local groups, and social welfare NGOs. They were Ms May Fung Man-yu, District Social Welfare Officer (Tai Po/North), Social Welfare Department, Ms Christina Maisenne Lee, Director of Wofoo Social Enterprises, Mr Gary Mak Shing-ho, Tai Po District Council Member, Mr Wong Wai-tung, Tai Po District Council Member and Vice-chairperson of Tai Po Youths Association, Ms Mar Mei-chun, Head of Service, Outreaching and Overnight Outreaching Services, Hong Kong Children & Youth Services Youth, Ms Ivy Fung Hoi-yin, Social Service Manager, Jockey Club Tin Ka Ping Integrated Children and Youth Service Centre, Yan Oi Tong, Ms Jamie Wan Kit-ming, Department Manager, Medical Social Work Department, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, Hospital Authority, Ms Angel Siu Wing-hung, Centre-in-charge, H.K.S.K.H. The Church of Saviour Social Service Centre – Jockey Club Family Express, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui, and Mr Kenny Chiu Tsz-kit, Team Leader (Kowloon City Mutual Aid Network), People Service Centre.
The event also featured service-learning fair booths to demonstrate students' participation in SAO activities, as well as interactive booths set up by social welfare NGOs to promote green living under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Over 700 students and academic and faculty staff attended the event.
Since launching “Moti-verse” in 2021, EdUHK has provided training and service experiences for students, enabling them to apply knowledge learnt from the University to real life, and connect students with society through community service. Over the past three years, SAO has organised over 400 community service activities, engaging around 5,800 student participants and benefiting over 8,000 recipients through partnerships with 75 local service partners.
Looking ahead, SAO will continue to provide service-learning activities based on the SDGs and enrich students' learning and practical experiences through collaboration with various groups in Tai Po, preparing for their future careers.
