EdUHK Develops AI Tutoring Application to Benefit Students from Low-Income Families

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), in collaboration with Principal Chan Free Tutorial World (PCFTW) and with funding from Shang Sin Chun Tong Charitable Foundation, has launched Phase III of an innovative online learning platform aimed at providing quality AI-enabled educational resources to students from low-income families.

The launch ceremony was held on 8 June 2024. Building on its earlier successes in Phase I and II – first with a platform hosting 5,000 teaching videos, then with a Generative-AI (ChatGPT) powered question-and-answer forum – Phase III of this project will introduce a sophisticated learning app designed to offer adaptive learning experiences. This phase will see the development of an AI-driven question-and-answer app that generates questions tailored to each student's level.

The development of the application will proceed through four stages:

  • Stage 1: Creation of a free basic question-and-answer app featuring over 10,000 pre-designed questions.
  • Stage 2: Integration of a ChatGPT robot to automatically generate questions across various subjects based on student requests.
  • Stage 3: Enhancement of the app with features for teaching and correcting essay writing.
  • Stage 4: Implementation of adaptive learning capabilities, wherein the app adjusts the content and difficulty of subsequent questions based on the student's performance.

Phase III commenced in January 2024 and will conclude in June 2025, with the app set to launch in the upcoming academic year, in September 2024. This initiative aims to extend its benefits beyond current PCFTW users to over 1,000 primary school students seeking learning support from PCFTW, thereby providing sustainable educational assistance. “The project stands to make a significant social impact, particularly in the realm of education for underprivileged students in Hong Kong, by understanding their specific needs,” said Dr Kevin Yung Wai-ho Principal Investigator and Associate Co-Director of the Academy for Educational Development and Innovation at EdUHK. “The findings will not only benefit the tutors of PCFTW but also enlighten similar fee-free supplementary tutoring service providers on how AI can enhance teaching and learning effectiveness.”

This project exemplifies EdUHK's commitment to leveraging cutting-edge AI technology to address educational inequalities and enhance learning outcomes for students in need.
