Ms Helen Gai Huixia is Associate Vice President (Mainland Engagement and Development) and Director of Communications and Engagement at The Education University of Hong Kong.
She is a seasoned media professional with extensive and specialised experience in media practice and management, covering newspapers, radio, magazines, and television, both in mainland China, overseas and Hong Kong.
After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, Ms Gai obtained an EMBA from Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management. She had also served as an instructor for professional master’s students at the School of Journalism and Communication at the South China University of Technology for many years.
Following her graduation from university, Ms Gai began her career as a reporter for the Beijing Daily, a major newspaper in China. She then worked in various media organisations, including Radio Thailand, The Universal Daily News in Thailand, Ming Pao, Hong Kong Economic Times, and Phoenix Television in Hong Kong, holding positions such as political columnist, English translator, radio host, television programme editor, deputy director of the editorial department, executive director of the editor-in-chief office and other management positions, making her journalism experience both diverse and complete.
Ms Gai’s rich journalistic experience includes significant coverage of major events, such as the negotiations on China's accession to the WTO and the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States. She has received Phoenix TV Group’s Best News Programme Planning Award and also represented the Television on the jury for news and documentary programmes for the 48th Monte-Carlo Television Festival. Ms Gai also participated in the development of the new media application ‘Phoenix Show’ and designed a comprehensive evaluation system for traditional television programmes that included new media assessment metrics and pioneering efforts in the broadcasting industry.
Ms Gai’s EMBA thesis at Tsinghua University was entitled ‘The Path of Transformation for Traditional Television Media from the Perspective of Phoenix Television's Integrated Media Strategy’. She has been invited multiple times to share her observations and thoughts on media convergence and new media development at national broadcasting industry conferences. Several of her research articles have been published in professional journals such as the Southern Television Journal. Ms Gai also has rich experience in cooperation with Mainland government administrative departments and social institutions.
