This initiative will embark on an e-Chinese learning platform for P1 to P6 students, with approximately 24 episodes of interactive teaching videos and games covering key learning areas of Chinese language, ranging from Chinese characters, Chinese poems and classical Chinese texts to part of speech, sentence structure and Rhetoric, among others.

This proposed project aims to achieve three main objectives: (1) To design and develop a sample unit of textbook for overseas lower primary L2 Chinese beginners, which will subsequently lead to a full-scale curriculum design. (2) To supplement and reinforce the understanding of the above teaching materials with a multi-media e-learning platform and/or mobile application. (3) To evaluate, consolidate and disseminate related teaching materials and research outputs via field work, a specialized seminar and a potential overseas conference.

A Multilingual Parent-child Reading Picture Book with Chinese Herbal Medicine as the Theme

摘要: Non-Chinese speaking students (notably ethnic minority students) in Hong Kong lack teaching materials and reference materials on Chinese language related to Chinese culture, so this project plans to design an experimental teaching material (a parent-child reading picture book) on Chinese culture. This project aims that young students from other countries can learn not only Chinese language but also traditional Chinese medicine, and spread the concept of healthy life to foreign young people through understanding common Chinese herbal medicines with edible value and basic medicinal properties. We hope that the main beneficiaries of this project are non-Chinese speaking students from mainstream schools in Hong Kong. At the same time, we also want to promote it to international schools in Hong Kong.

On the Motivations of Some Important Changes of Pronouns in the History of Chinese Language: From the Perspective of Influences of Buddhism and Buddhist Translation on Chinese

漢語代詞在歷史上幾個重要變化之動因研究——以佛教及佛經翻譯對漢語發展演變的影響為視角

摘要:  Since Buddhism was introduced to China in Han Dynasty, plenty of Buddhist texts were translated into Chinese successively. The spreading of Buddhism in China had a great impact on Chinese culture. As language is the most important medium of culture, influences of Buddhism on Chinese culture were realized through the Chinese language. Therefore, exploring influences of Buddhist translation on the Chinese language is very important not only to the language change itself but also to the change in the culture. This project is a continuation of a previously finished project conducted by the applicant (PI): Assessing the impact of Sanskrit on the Chinese language: Creating a database of Chinese Buddhist translations and their Sanskrit parallels to facilitate research in historical Chinese linguistics through contrastive analysis (HKIEd844710). We will use the database established in this previous project to do some further researches in order to find more facts about influences of translated Buddhist texts on Chinese. This project will focus on the changes of pronouns in the history of Chinese language. We will try to find the relation between Buddhist translation and the motivations of changes of pronouns.
