Understanding how young Non-Chinese Speaking students interact in Chinese: influences of task characteristics and intersubjectivity 探索任務特徵和主體間性對非華語小學生口語互動的影響 
摘要: This project studies the Chinese oral communicative competence of Non-Chinese Speaking (NCS) students by investigating the influences of task characteristics and intersubjectivity on students’ negotiation of meaning. Research has demonstrated that task characteristics affect how students negotiated for ambiguous meaning in interaction. This issue is seldom examined in young L2 learners, and little is known about how intersubjectivity affects the relationship between task characteristics and negotiation of meaning. Contributing to the literature, this study aims to investigate this issue in NCS primary students. The results can advance our understanding of the relationship between task characteristics and students’ negotiation of meaning by considering the effects of intersubjectivity.

From Appreciation of Classical Chinese Poetry to Moral and Affective Education

從詩詞欣賞到品德情意教育

摘要: 本計劃已得到海內外文學界及教育界的專家學者擔任顧問,冀望合力從環球視野來全面探討古典詩詞在現代社會的重要意義。由詩詞專家學者組成的研究團隊將會設計教學大綱,編寫實驗教材,以呈現詩詞的深層內涵和當代意義,並組織學校進行實驗。參加實驗的學校老師,可以參加專門為培訓詩歌與德育教學的教師工作坊,掌握實驗教材的編寫理念、教學方法和評估方式,並可利用學生生活例子豐富教材,然後指導學生學習,逐步進行階段性的評估,以求為學校編訂校本教材提供示範及參考。

Executive functioning in reading comprehension in Chinese with and without dialect speaking

摘要: The proposed study investigates the direct and indirect associations of executive functioning (i.e., working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility), lexical quality (i.e., morphological awareness, orthographic awareness), with word reading and linguistic comprehension, in predicting reading comprehension among Chinese primary school grade 3 students across Hong Kong (with inconsistent oral-written language arising from linguistic distance (differences between spoken and written languages) and Shenzhen (with perfectly consistent oral-written language).

A Child Language Corpus on Trilingual Children's Thinking Competence

摘要: This research aims to develop the prototype of corpus with oral output of trilingual children in English, Cantonese and Putonghua. The significance of this project is to understand the technical requirement in constructing a large-scale corpus which not only provides the authentic materials to study the trilingual proficiency of Hong Kong students, but also leads to evidence-based analysis of multilingual children’s thinking competence.

項目名稱:

Speech Sound Production and Perception of Putonghua by Cantonese-speaking Children in Primary Schools

摘要: In this project, we propose to carry out a cross-sectional study among Cantonese-speaking children from Primary 1, Primary 3, and Primary 5 in Hong Kong. Acoustic measurement will be conducted to identify Putonghua production errors more accurately. Our pilot studies suggest this new technique can help to find out hidden problems that cannot be revealed by traditional impressionistic methods. Thus, in addition to a general assessment of the language production of Putonghua by Cantonese-speaking children, acoustic measurement will be conducted on those problematic phonemes in order to obtain a more accurate analysis. Perception studies will also be conducted within the framework of the Perception Assimilation Model (Best, 1995). Discrimination tasks and identification tasks will be carried out and analyzed to investigate whether perception affects production error patterns. We will also try to propose an integrated assimilation model of perception and production according to the experimental data.

Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in Chinese-Speaking Areas versus Overseas: A Dialogue between Hong Kong and Vietnam

摘要: Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL, henceforth) has been more and more prosperous in recent years, which is conducted simultaneously both in Chinese-speaking areas (including Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau) and overseas. The current project aims to call for a dialogue between these two sides, with Hong Kong as a representative of Chinese-speaking areas and Vietnam as a representative of overseas countries. We propose to invite TCSL teachers at Vietnam to join the annual International Seminar on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at our EdUHK. We will invite them to provide lectures at a workshop as well as experience sharing sessions with us. They can help us to know more about the needs of L2 learners overseas, and more specifically, the needs of Vietnam students, which may also be expanded to L2 students at Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, through joining our seminar, these guest Vietnam teachers can get informed of more about TCSL in Hong Kong and China, which will bring new perspectives of insight to them for their future teaching.
